Let’s face it, deciding when to redesign your current site can be a bit daunting. What do you do first? How do you know if your website needs a makeover? We have put together a short checklist of four of the most common reasons why your website may need a makeover.
1. Your website needs new features
Its very common to want to update and add new features and functionality to your website because over time your business needs may change. Older sites become a monster of a pain when considering adding newer and dynamic functionality simply because some features aren’t backwards-compatible. Ultimately, you might hit a a dead end with continuing to update an older site since it becomes harder and harder to add new features. Let’s also not forget that older websites are very vulnerable to being hacked or compromised since older software contains holes for hackers to manipulate.
2. Your website isnt mobile responsive
What used to be considered acceptable design no longer makes the cut in our world of ever-changing technology. In January of 2020, Google decided to give precedence to responsive websites that cater to users who access their sites using mobile and tablet devices. Google added mobile-first indexing best practices stating that websites should provide an identical experience on both mobile and desktop. So if your website doesnt provide this experience, it will experience a drastic drop in search engine traffic. We now live in a time of a mobile-friendly website being a requirement instead of an option. This requirement carries so much weight that Google has begun to penalize websites that are not optimized for mobile/tablet devices.
3. Your website looks abandoned and poorly maintained
Websites must be maintained just like your phone or your car. In an ideal world, we could continue using the same iPhone and never have to worry about upgrading the operating system or the device itself. We all know that happens to older phones which aren’t kept updated. They either become buggy, begin to malfunction, or stop working altogether. This concept can be applied to an older website that hasn’t been kept up to date with the latest bug fixes, security updates, and software.
4. You want your site to rank well through Search Engine Optimization
So you want your website to rank high on page one and be easily discovered by your customers? Search Engine Optimization is a long and tedious process that happens over a period of several months and not days. It is a strategy that must be worked on and then modified to fit your business goals over time. Most campaigns require a 4-6 month implementation before any major milestones are met Highly ranking websites have an allotted budget with a persistent and carefully-planned campaign strategy that keeps them in that position.
Google has many factors that need consideration when determining how well your site will rank with organic search results vs. paid traffic results. There are a few factors such as site loading speed, page content, badly ranking keywords, and mobile optimization that will force your site’s placement further away from page one. Even if you purchase Google ads, you will only waste your money because your site will still be in bad shape and no amount of paid ads will help you rank higher. Buying paid ads will only place a band-aid on the issue and create more frustration in the end.
